Balcony & Barrier Testing

Balcony and Barrier Testing

All balcony and barrier testing is carried out in accordance with BS 6180:2011, BS 6355-1:1556.

Understanding Balcony and Barrier Testing

For safety reasons, barriers located within buildings; as well as external balcony balustrades and temporary edge protection systems—must comply with specific codes and standards based on their design and location.

Compliance is typically demonstrated through detailed inspections and load/displacement testing of structural components and infill panels. Such testing can be carried out to validate new barrier designs prior to installation or to confirm the structural integrity and regulatory compliance of existing systems. Various tests are employed, including horizontal line loads, point loads applied to infill areas, and uniformly distributed loads across the surface.
